KAS Eligibility Criteria and Syllabus

Education Qualification

Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University. Age LimIt – The  minimum age limit to attend the exam is 21 years, while the maximum is 35 years, extendable up to 40 years for different categories.

For General Merit – 35 years,
OBC(Other backward classes) – 37 years
SC/ST – 40 years
The maximum number of attempts depends on your caste.
There are 6 attempts for General Category, 7 attempts for OBC, and No limit for SC/ST/CAT-1.

KAS Exams Pattern

KAS is not an examination, it is one of the services that are conducted by the KPSC board. KPSC(Karnataka public service commission) conducts an exam called Gazetted probationary officer exams. In general it is known as KAS exams.

The Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) exam has three papers:

Stage 1 – Preliminary examination (Multiple choice questions)
Stage 2 – mains examination (Written test)
Stage 3 – Interview (Personality Test)

Stage 1

Has 2 papers Paper 1 (General Studies), Paper 2 (Humanities) and aptitudes, current affairs in application with karnataka and National importance. Both the papers will be of MCQ’s which will be conducted in 1 day. Each paper has 100 questions and carries 2 marks, totalling 200 marks.

Note – Negative evaluation – for every wrong answer 1/4th marks will be deducted as penalty for wrong answering.
Preliminary is just a qualifying paper for the mains, and the marks obtained in prelims are not counted for final ranking.

2nd Stage Mains

Mains is of Descriptive in nature and all the questions will be in written form. It has two sections. First section will be on language test, where just qualifying papers
Second section will be having Essay writing and General studies totally 1250.

The first paper includes topics such as Indian and Karnataka history, geography, economics, polity, and current affairs. The second paper covers humanities subjects such as sociology, psychology, anthropology, and social work. The third paper includes topics such as administrative aptitude, ethics, integrity in governance, and public policy. Candidates who qualify for the preliminary exam will have to appear for the main exam, which has nine papers in total.
