What is IES / ESE- Engineering Service ?

ESE (Engineering service exams) - IES (Indian Engineering Service)

ESE: Engineering Service Exam is conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service commission) for the various recruitment of Engineering of the Government of India.

IES officers are selected by the union government on the recommendations made by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
A combined three-stage competitive examination (Prelims, Mains and Personality test), called the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), is conducted by the UPSC for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services.

Hierarchy structure or Career Growth of an IES Officer

  • Entry Level Post - Assistant Executive Engineer or Assistant Director.
  • 3 to 4 years experienced - will be promoted to Executive Engineer or Director.
  • 13 years experienced - will be appointed as a Joint General Manager or Chief Engineer of level 2.
  • 20 years experienced - will be promoted to the post of Additional General Manager or Chief Engineer.
  • 30 years experienced - will become a Senior General Manager.
  • Final promotion - Almost during retirement after experienced of 34 years, the candidate will become a Managing Director or Chairperson of the governmental organization.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Age limitations
    • Minimum – 21 years
    • Maximum depends upon caste category
      • GM – 30 years
      • OBC – 33 years
      • SC/ST– 35 years
      • Blind, Deaf-Mute, Ortho-Handicapped 10 Years of relaxation
      • Ex-Servicemen-35 Years

  • Note – Age is calculated as on 1st January of that particular year.

    • BE(Bachelor of Engineering) from any stream
      • Civil Engineering
      • Mechanical Engineering
      • Electrical and electronics
      • Electronics and communication
      • Computer science engineering
    • Under graduates who are pursuing final semester of BE
    • Degree must be obtained from the UGC(University Grant Commission) recognized universities

Note – computer science engineers must learn any one subjects from Civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and communications and choose the same as convectional optional paper in prelims and mains.
