Voter Awareness Forums launched across the country
In New Delhi, Election Commission of India launched the Voter Awareness Forum (VAF) across India. Simultaneously, chief electoral officers and district election officers launched VAFs at their respective departments.
About Voters Awareness Forums
‘How to spread the voting awareness?’ has been one of the daunting questions which Indian government was facing. The election commission has come up with a possible solution by launching the Voters Awareness Forums (VAF).
The commission has set up VAF for creating awareness on election and voting process. Voter Awareness forum conducts Quizzes, discussion, and interactive activities for the future voter awareness and also for existing voters to participate actively in the examination.
VAF is a part of Electoral Literacy Club programme which election commission of India launched on 25th January 2018. The ELC programme aim was to set up an electoral literary club at every educational institution. Now the commission has already established 2.11 lakhs ELCs in the first year of program launch.
This initiative is targeted from the roots of states and districts to create the local election awareness. The commission expects all employees of the organization to participate actively as members of VAF with the head of the organization as the chairperson.
Election commission addressed Nodal officers from the 44 ministries of the Indian government, also to representatives of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) to set up the VAFs and to involve all the employees in the initiative.
Chief Election Commissioner Shri Sunil Arora praised our democracy and constitution for resting the power for selecting the leader in the hands of a citizen. He also added that this is the responsibility for everyone to value and preserve this right. This is the core of Voters Awareness Forums. He also requested all the Nodal officers to commit for this goal.
The Election Commissioner Shri. Ashok Lavasa praised thousands of government officials as the ‘Ambassadors of Democracy’. The Senior Deputy Election Commissioner briefed about the ‘Voter Verification and Information’ drive and asked VAF members to verify names and details on Electoral Roll through online NVSP portal of ECI and the Voter Helpline No 1950
The role of VAF and the functions of the nodal officer’s concepts were briefed in the half-day session. Chief Electoral Officers and District Election Officers held similar sessions across the country in which all the nodal officers, Non-government department, media houses, and many organizations participated.
