Sadbhavana Diwas

Sadbhavana Diwas is celebrated on 20th August annually. India is the land of diversity in caste, religion, region, and language; still, it is praised for its unity in the nation.   • Sadbhavana in English means ‘Harmony’. This day is, therefore “Harmony Day” indicating India’s Communal harmony.
  • Sadbhavana Diwas 2019 is celebrated to encourage integrity, which is to forget all boundaries and be as one. That is to say, every community and section live with love and harmony with each other.
  • Our former 6th Prime Minister Sri Rajiv Gandhi was one of the prime leaders who believed in harmony, in other words, Sadbhavana and integrity. 
  • Rajiv Gandhi whose birth anniversary is celebrated as Sadbhavana Diwas every year in India. Thereby the Sadbhavana Diwas date is chosen.
  • In particular, all the leaders from other political parties, as well as congressmen, pay their respect to Rajiv Gandhi at Veer Bhoomi, Delhi on this day.
  • Harmony day 2019 is celebrated on 20th August 2019, Tuesday.

Facts About Rajiv Gandhi’s on Harmony Day

  • Rajiv Gandhi was a person who dreamt of a developed India. 
  • Being the son of Indira Gandhi and grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru, Leadership was in his blood. Also, he was known as the Goodwill Ambassador to the world.
  • Among the Indian Prime Ministers, Rajiv Gandhi was the youngest. He believed that especially a young nation like India should be strong, free and be the first to serving mankind.
  • Furthermore, for restoring world peace he opted for assertive policies. He freed the leaders of Akali Dal, who were imprisoned after the Operation Blue Star.
  • In 1989, India sends IPKF (Indian Peacekeeping force) to Sri Lanka to restore civilian order.
  • For exceptional contribution to promoting communal harmony AICC (All India Congress Committee) gives Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award.
  • In 1991, during prime career time at the age of 47, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated and thus nation lost a prominent leader.

Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award:

On the occasion of this day, a chosen Indian is awarded Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award for his/her contribution to national harmony. 

Sadbhavana Award was given since 1992 by the All India Congress Committee including cash of Rs.10 lakhs. 

Mother Teresa is among some of the major personals to receive the Sadbhavana Award. Likewise, other recent winners are as follows.

Harmony Day 2019 Activities:

  • Generally, the day is celebrated as a national festival.
  • In particular, garlands and tributes are paid at Rajiv Gandhi Veer Bhoomi by family, congress Leaders and members. Similarly, thousands of followers pay their respects to their beloved Leader.
  • In addition to the above-mentioned activities, environment protection, conservation of resources, blood donation, similarly many activities are done on Harmony Day 2019.
  • Moreover, some take pledge Harmony Day to do good above all discrimination and work for harmony.
