INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY

Most of us have indulged in our daily routines so much that we can’t even spare even a minute for thinking about helping others. But there are millions of volunteers who dedicate their whole lives for helping others. They are humanitarians, emergency aids and medical professionals who come to the aid of people when met with emergency situations.

International Volunteer Day is observed on 5th December every year to recognize and honor the efforts of volunteer’s efforts and contributions in the time of crisis like natural disasters and human warfare. International Volunteer also provides a unique opportunity to share their values and promote their work. The International Volunteer day 2018 will be on 5th December, Wednesday.

What is International Volunteer Day

  • In 1985 UN general assembly voted for the A/RES/40/212 to adopt International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development or International volunteer day on 5th December annually. This UN initiative was to spread the values of volunteerism to inspire people worldwide.
  • To emphasize the significance of this UN designated the year 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers. On this year Government and UN worked on facilitating the volunteers with better communication and improved volunteers’ benefits.
  • In the year 2002, the UN general assembly established the United Nation Volunteer Programme to organize and manage the International volunteer activities.

United Nation Volunteer Programme

United Nation Volunteer (UNV) Programme is dedicated to volunteerism development and to promote peace worldwide. It serves as a global platform for all the volunteer associations and UN volunteers to coordinate and conduct development programs worldwide.

Headquarters of UN is at Germany with 150 staff and manage 6,500 UN volunteers across the world. One of the major tasks of UNV is to administer United Nation development programs and report it to UN executive boards.

Why World Volunteer day is celebrated?

1.3 million people have died from the disaster over the last twenty years. Volunteers helped millions of them to cope up with the crisis.

Volunteers also play a significant role in supporting sustainable development and Millennium development goals for fighting against poverty, hunger, gender inequality, illiteracy, environmental contamination and more.

International volunteer day provides an opportunity for individuals to promote their efforts and spirit of volunteerism. International volunteer day improves the partnership between UN, Government, volunteer organizations and individuals.

 International Volunteer day activities

Many events are organized across the globe for the international volunteer’s day celebration. Marathons, Walkathon, workshops and other interactive activities are organized to promote volunteerism. The focus of this day is major in schools and colleges to inspire the young generation to take up volunteerism and develop a mindset for helping people

UNV organizes ‘UNV online Volunteer Award’ to honor five online volunteer individuals or team for their projects in peace and development

International Volunteer day Theme

To give a focus point for the volunteer day celebrations a World Volunteer day theme is set every year. The International Volunteer day 2017 theme was ‘Volunteers Act First. Here. Everywhere.

International Volunteer day 2017 activities focus was on the efforts of volunteers as first responders when the world faces with crisis. When the emergency occurs, volunteers all around the response to the call for saving lives and help people regain their life back. International volunteer day 2017 aim was to promote these volunteer contributions.

International Volunteer day 2018 theme is yet to be announced.
