International Nurses Day is observed worldwide every May 12 as a commemoration to Florence Nightingale’s birth anniversary. Florence Nightingale was born on May 12th, 1820, who is known as the founder of the modern nursing system. This day also raises the awareness of all the nurse’s issues in their environment like handling poor, poverty issues, etc.  

International Nurses Day- a History

In 1953, a U.S Department of Health, Education and Welfare officer Dorothy Sutherland first proposed Nurses Day. Later in the year 1965, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) started the celebration of the International Nurses Day. After 1974, they chose 12th May to celebrate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, who is also called as the founder of modern nursing.

For the world Nurses Day celebrations, the International Council of Nurses gives out the International Nurses Day Kit every year. This kit will contain the educational and public information, which nurses use for the public.      

Florence Nightingale

In 1820,  Florence Nightingale was born in Florence of Italy. In the Crimean War, she worked at the British base hospital. She improved hygiene and unsanitary conditions which reduced the British death count by two-thirds. Not only she was an excellent nurse, but her writing revolutionized the global health care systems. Later in 1860, she also founded the St.Thomas Hospital and Nightingale Training School for Nurses. On August 13, 1910, she demised in London. Florence Nightingale showed the world the significance of a nurse. So, to highlight the importance of the crucial role played by nurses to provide excellent health care services ICN established the Nurses day on her birth date.

How International Nurses Day is celebrated?

On this day in Westminster Abbey, people organize a candle lamp service. In which, nurses pass over the candle lamps to others signifying the passing of knowledge. In the end, they will place it on a high High Altar. A day after Nightingale’s birthday, people organize a big ceremony at the St. Margaret’s Church, which her burial place.

Many Nations organize events to honor nurses contributions and commitments in maintaining the health of the common public. Events like educational seminars, community festivity, debates, workshops are organized. Many appreciate the nurses by giving flowers and gifts.

Nurses are the hospitality of the hospital’, this International Nurses Day quote represents the core of these celebrations.
