How to apply for IES exam?

Before applying for the IES you should know the answer to two important questions:

Who can apply for IES?

To apply for IES, understanding the IES exam eligibility is important. So, Engineers who are below the age of 30 years can apply for engineering service exams. Click here for complete IES exam eligibility details and age relaxations.

When can you apply for engineering service exam?

UPSC will release an official notification for IES exam around September/ October. The UPSC official notification will have complete details about the IES exam. This UPSC IES official notification release is crucial as it also commences the IES application procedure. Usually, there will be a month duration for applying Engineering Service Exam. But it would be a wise decision not to wait till the last date for IES application submission.

Documents required filling the IES application form

  • Valid email ID and mobile number
  • 10th standard, 10+2 standard, and all engineering semester/ qualifying exam mark sheet.
  • Category certificates and physically disability certificates (If applicable)
  • Photograph and signature scanned copy

IES application procedure:

The engineering service exam application form will be available at the UPSC official website from the date of the IES official notification release. So, candidates have to visit the UPSC official website ( to fill the ESE application form. At the UPSC homepage click on the “online application for various examinations of UPSC”. Click on the ‘new user’ for one-time registration. After UPSC registration you will be redirected to the ESE online application form page. However, if candidates have already registered then you can directly fill the IES application form. Further, there are two parts in the ESE application process:

UPSC Registration part I: Filling your basic details

  1. Name and Parent’s Name: as per the 10th or 10+2 mark sheet
  2. Date of birth: as per the 10th or 10+2 mark sheet
  3. Gender and Nationality
  4. Email address and Mobile Number: Provide valid mobile number and email ID for communication-related to IES.
  5. Password: Maximum 10 digit password needed for future logins. The password should contain a minimum of 1 character and 1 number
  6. Academic details: Aggregate marks in percentage, total marks and passing year and exam conducting board details of 10th standard, 10+2 standard, B. Tech (or qualifying exam)

After filling the UPSC registration part I click on ‘Save and continue’. A registration ID and password will generate which is required for future logins. A confirmation message for completing the registration process will be sent to your registered mobile number and email ID.

UPSC Registration part II: Paying the IES exam fee, choosing the exam center and uploading the scanned photo and signature

  1. To start filling the registration part II, log in by using your ‘Registration Number’ and ‘Date of birth’
  2. Select the fee payment option: Online or through cash deposit
  3. Choose the IES exam center which is continent for you
  4. Upload the scanned images of Photograph and Signature
  5. Agree to the declaration

Carefully review the IES application form before submitting, as there is no provision for editing the details after final submission. Click on ‘submit’ to complete the IES application process.
